Dayton, OHIO – Chaminade Julienne begins a new school year with many changes coming to the cafeteria. Changes include a shift in prices as well as different offerings for students.

W.G. Grinders is the organization that CJ contracts out to run their cafeteria. W.G. Grinders has run the cafe for the past four years. Grinders runs lunch and the After School Cafe.

Grinders has offered many food options but student’s primary focus in regards to the lunch changes is less on the items, and rest more with their prices.

Prices for many of the items have been raised. With lunch prices being raised students are often prevented from buying any additional items. The price of a meal is around $4.00 and typically includes a main dish and a side. This price has remained mostly constant as last year some meals cost $3.50-$4.25. .

If students aren’t interested in the meal of the day they may find themselves spending even more. For a Grinder, a water, and a bag of chips students will pay six dollars .

The price changes aren’t a lot just a couple cents more on many of the favorites in the cafeteria like pizza, pretzels, Grinders, etc. The pizza was $2.25 last year, now is $2.50, pretzels were $1.50 now $2.00, plus 25 cents more if you desire cheese. Grinders were $3.00 and are now $3.50. Over time though these differences add to a lot of many (between a dollar or two  a week if a student buys everyday).

Many of the seniors have seen the prices take their toll over the years.

“Cost too much,” said senior Dashaun Ivy, who is a frequent shopper.

For the seniors, this is a change from their freshman year.

“The prices are way too high,” says senior Rian Wilson.

However, Grinder’s will offer more food choices for the hot meal throughout the year than previous years though which could appeal to students. The food quality is clearly better as well than what they had coming into CJ. Only time will tell how it shakes out this school year.
